    Caramelized Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Roasted sweet potatoes can be incredible when they caramelize properly. The key is how they're roasted.

Before roasting, these sweet potatoes are tossed with avocado oil, pure maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon. The result is a tender center with a deep golden caramelized surface.

They're perfect served alone, with a simple vegetable like sautéed green beans, or alongside comforting sides like Southern collard greens, skillet cornbread, or even a small serving of baked mac and cheese.

    Ingredient Notes

Sweet Potatoes: Choose firm sweet potatoes that are roughly the same size, so they roast evenly.

Avocado Oil: Keeps the potatoes from drying out.

Pure Maple Syrup: Adds natural sweetness and contributes to caramelization.

Brown Sugar: Deepens the caramel flavor and enhances browning.

Cinnamon: Adds warmth that complements sweet potatoes.

    Tips Before You Start

    • Roast Cut-Side Down: Placing the sweet potatoes flesh-side down allows direct contact with the hot pan, creating deeper caramelization.
    • Use High Heat: Roasting at 415°F enhances proper roasting compared to lower oven temperatures.
    • Visual Cue: When ready, the sweet potatoes should release easily from the parchment, and the bottoms will appear deep golden and lightly sticky from caramelization.

How to Make Caramelized Roasted Sweet Potatoes

    Here's a quick overview:

Cut the sweet potatoes in half lengthwise, then toss them until they're evenly coated.

Place on a lined baking sheet with the flesh side down.

Roast them in a preheated oven until they're tender.

Then, remove them from the oven and carefully flip them over.

    What to Watch For

The sweet potatoes are ready when:

    • The bottoms are deep golden brown
    • They release easily from the parchment
    • A fork slides easily through the center

That caramelized surface is where most of the flavor develops.

    What to Serve With

These caramelized roasted sweet potatoes pair well with hearty Southern main dishes such as:

    • Oven-Baked Chuck Roast
    • Braised Boneless Short Ribs
    • Oven-Baked Beef Short Ribs
